General Information on Government Agencies

Maintaining comprehensive, accurate, timely, and reliable information in the NPDB is possible only through participation by healthcare organizations and state agencies. All Federal Government agencies that administer or provide payments for the provision of health care services must register in the NPDB. Federal government agencies must also report any changes in actions that were reported earlier, such as redeterminations, and whether the action is being appealed.

Adjudicated actions or decisions are final, official, official actions taken by a federal government agency, state fraud enforcement agency, or a health care program. Executive Branch of the Federal Government The federal government includes the Office of the Executive Branch, which is headed by the president, and the U.S. Federal Departments of Administration (whose secretaries are part of the cabinet). Executive departments are units of the government that are directly overseen by the president.

Most of the United States governments independent agencies are also classified as executive agencies (they are independent because they are not subject to a cabinet-level post). Agencies like the Government Printing Office, Library of Congress, Congressional Budget Office, and General Accounting Office, which provide congressional support services, are also part of the legislative branch of government. The Comptroller General of the United States heads the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an agency in The Federal governments Legislative Branch. In addition to serving as the federal governments principal watchdog, the Comptroller General issues Government Accountability Standards and attends audit-related international forums.

As GAOSs Chief Executive Officer, the Comptroller General has general oversight over the operation of the agency. The Office of the Solicitors carries out its mission by representing the Secretary and agency clients in all required litigation, including both enforcement actions and defense actions, as well as in alternative dispute resolution activities; assisting with rulemaking, standards, and legislative proposals; and providing legal opinions and guidance regarding all activities of the U.S. Department of Labor. Other federal departments also have agencies that are responsible for health, such as the Food and Nutrition Service within the Department of Agriculture, the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services within the Department of Education, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The public health service includes

(1) the Centers for Disease Control;

(2) the National Institutes of Health;

(3) the Health Care Financing Administration;

(4) the Health Resources and Services Administration;

(5) the Agency for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health; and

(6) the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

We work collaboratively with industry, labor, and other Federal and State agencies to enhance the safety and health conditions for all miners in the United States. Section 515 of the Fiscal Year 2001 appropriations act, titled The Treasury and General Government Accountability Act (Public Law 106-0554), directed OMB to publish a Governmentwide Guidance Document providing policies and procedures to Federal agencies for ensuring and maximizing the quality, objectivity, utility, and integrity of the information, including statistical information, that Federal agencies disseminate.
